Educational research has shown that most people don’t develop skills in isolation. Rather, they improve their cognitive abilities by partnering skills development (such as reading, test-taking, or memory skills) with a heightened awareness of how they approach a given task. This “metacognitive awareness”, with practice, enables people to learn with greater success, ease, confidence, and with more of an in internal sense of how to transfer these strategies to attain future goals.
At Ivy Prep, we use a neuropsychological instructional approach in which tutoring focuses on the “how” of learning in light of that individual student’s learning style. We use actual school or work content, incorporating that material as a backdrop for developing learning strategies to increase a student’s metacognitive awareness and to enhance skills development. We integrate remediation to classroom instruction or workplace demands, and (where appropriate) we coordinate our methodology to support other services such as occupational or speech therapy.
